KL Trip - Day 1

We embarked on a trip that only Mother was looking forward to. The last time we have travelled as a family was 8 years ago, for Grandmother's funeral.

I left my phone behind. SIGH.

At KLIA2, we found that the taxis wouldn't go to the city centre due to the Grand Prix. The only alternative was KLIA Ekspres, which we have already eliminated earlier. What? So we were stuck with this lousy choice?

Private taxis a.k.a 霸王车 to the rescue! A tout approached us and offered his service. Actually, we wanted to get lunch first, but since there was nothing much to eat at the airport anyway, we just bought bottled water. Touting is good when you need it!! We were lucky to be ferried in the same vehicle to our destination, safely and cheaply! He even recommended the shop to get the water from!

My attention was immediately drawn to the driving antics of Malaysians. Damn fierce can! The privilege of weaving among lanes was not restricted to 2-wheelers only. No signalling or hand signals, it can happen without warning. It's especially bad at slip roads. A lot of honking will ensue, but amazingly, nobody gets into any accident. Wow, their cars must be very good! And Singaporeans must be really terrible drivers!

While approaching our apartment, I noticed the streets were lined with bars and restaurants, aimed at angmohs.

After settling down, it's already late afternoon and counted as evening already. Go for dinner then. Jalan Alor food street was just down the road. The stalls were vying for customers, inviting every person they see to sit down. Brother said they sell pretty much the same thing, so we can just pick one now without the need to walk further. We picked a seafood stall.

We ordered 2 crabs, hotplate tofu, and I think lala and some meat. While waiting, I observed there were many Thai stalls and many of the Chinese seafood stalls were actually run by Burmese. Throughout the meal, we were assaulted with offers of selfie sticks. Irritating! Frankly, the food was not really fantastic.

Mother went for a walk down the street because she wouldn't believe everything was the same. She returned after making the same discovery.

Parents returned to the apartment as Mother had to cook since she couldn't find anything to eat. The night was still young, so the kids went exploring!

We walked to the city centre. I haven't even seen the Twin Towers before, so you can imagine. And "Petronas" has even been dropped from its name.

Many, many beggars and Middle Eastern people. Those Middle Eastern people walk damn slowly and never give way! Much of the streets are narrow and broken, making it difficult for pushing. Things only become calmer in the malls. Mall shopping was expensive. Nothing very special either. The mall toilets were generally clean and pleasant. Standalone handicapped cubicles were available.

Fortunately, the cluster of shopping malls are all reasonably well-connected to one another. One of the lifts was unlit. At least it worked fine. On the way, I noticed barricades along the road. The kind that we erect for F1. But no F1 now, right?

Pavilion KL Shopping Mall looked rather empty. Maybe because it looked too upmarket? Spotted veiled Middle Eastern women buying eye makeup. All women are 爱美 one lah tsk tsk.

Sister and I checked out Aesop. Their sales assistant might be a ballerina, as she was standing like this:
I mean, just her feet. While on a wheelchair and being shorter than normal people, I can't help but notice people's feet more.

The row of restaurants outside looked so happening! So, so crowded! So many foreigners! Should we feel fortunate to have had our dinner already?

Moved on to Suria KLCC. Can see more families here, although there are many luxury brands here. Looking for dessert and found 许刘山 Hui Lau Shan! Why KL have but Singapore don't have! At least I don't have to go HK for it. Alas, limited seats at the dine-in area, so we had to takeaway and savour at a bench 20m away.

Shopped at Cold Storage. Bought groceries, including our all-time favourite 康师傅 instant mee! And beer!

Went outside to see the Twin Towers. So many bats. Ok, been there, done that!

Walked back to our apartment. Uphill and crowded. Stopped by Jalan Alor food street to buy some fruits. We passed by a very old block of apartments, not sure if it's private or public, and it looks like it's in dire need of maintenance! The void deck was unlit, has turned into a dumpster, and has leaking/running tap. If not for the light from the residents' units, it will qualify as a horror movie film set. Argh! How do people enter and exit, and even live there?

Showered and feasted on fruits, instant mee, beer and one of the Bottega Veneta SG50 champagne. So full~

While preparing to sleep, suddenly, we heard fireworks! Why? Singapore National Day celebrations? Followed by lots of clingclanging from afar.
